Prenzlauer Berg is located north-east of Mitte. Formerly a communist neighborhood, it has now become a fashion and art district. The many shops, kitsch boutiques, and vintage shops give this neighborhood a unique atmosphere. Trendy hotspot in this area attract young crowds who fill the terrace cafés and alternative-style bars around city centerpieces of Kollwitzplatz (one of Berlin's best squares), Helmholtzplatz and Wasserturm. A particularly popular attraction in this district is the Kulturbrauerei which was an old brewery now converted into a center of arts encompassing shops and nightlife. Located nearby is Volkspark Friedrichshain (an intercity park) with a variety of lakes, fountains, beergardens and film theatre.
